From Rocket Science to Soul Science

Born into generations of Ayurvedic healers in Sri Lanka and trained as a chemical engineer in England, Dr. Lingam once worked on rocket fuels in the United States. A newborn daughter's inflamed skin changed his path. In 1988 he co-founded Hylunia Skin Care, and later Hymed Skincare, uniting ancient Ayurveda with modern science to care for skin, mind and body.

About Dr. Lingam

A bridge between two worlds that rarely meet

Dr. Lingam is a chemical engineer, former rocket-fuel researcher, skincare scientist, co-founder of Hylunia Skin Care and Hymed Skincare, naturopath, wellness expert and motivational speaker. He calls himself a green and organic crusader, a mission that began when he found toxic chemicals in his own baby's skincare.

Since 1988 he has combined the wisdom of the East with the science of the West in formulations and wellness programs. His work spans Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, mantra, Ayurvedic aromacology, chakra balancing, detox and Panchakarma, nutrition, skincare and, above all, happiness.

One purpose has guided all of it: to benefit humanity.

His Story

Four countries, one thread of curiosity

From a village apothecary in Sri Lanka to laboratories in England, Canada and the United States.

Sri LankaRoots

Early life and an Ayurvedic family

Dr. Lingam was born into a lineage of healers rather than wealth. His grandfather and great-grandfathers were Ayurvedic physicians, said to read illness in the faintest change of a pulse. His father, a school principal and boxing coach, practised Ayurveda after school hours and offered it to the village for free.

Watching neighbours arrive with their ailments, young Lingam learned that a healer listens to the whole person, and that helping others brings good karma. As a boy he blended neem and turmeric, hand-ground sandalwood paste and slipped behind the family apothecary to smell rare herbs.

He also wanted to know why remedies worked. Chemistry became his passion. In high school he built an eight-foot replica of the Saturn V rocket and launched small homemade rockets into the sky.

Focus, confidence and the firewalk

Encouraged into sport by his father, he chose track and field so he could keep time for his studies. He trained in high jump and hurdles and became national school champion in the high jump. The lesson stayed with him: put all your energy into one thing and you can succeed.

At twelve, at a religious festival, his father had him and his ten-year-old sister walk across fire, telling them to walk fast, never stop and believe they would not be burned. They crossed safely. His father, his role model, taught him to believe in himself, take chances and never fear failure.

When he left for England on a scholarship, his mother placed holy ash on his forehead and gave him a gold ring set with a yellow sapphire. His father asked him never to forget the family's knowledge. He never did.

Chemical engineering

He earned a BSc (Honours) in Chemical Engineering at Teesside University, studying with an intensity his professors remembered. He wanted to master the craft, not simply pass exams.

Through a work-study program he joined the pharmaceutical company Glaxo, learning batch manufacturing of the antibiotics penicillin and cephalothin. Years later, that experience shaped how he manufactured skincare.

The rocket years

After graduating he moved to Canada and joined a synthetic fuel plant in Alberta, studying combustion and energy at the molecular level. The plant's U.S. parent company won a United States Air Force contract to develop synthetic fuels for rockets and military aircraft.

In 1978 he was invited to join its research and development team in the United States, working on propulsion systems, rocket fuels and classified military projects. Through long days of equations and pressure chambers, he kept his evening meditation practice, and his Ayurvedic roots stayed with him.

The day the skin spoke

The birth of his daughter changed everything. Days old, she was treated with a lotion recommended by trusted parenting magazines. Within an hour a red, angry rash spread across her skin.

He read the ingredient label as he would an engineering blueprint and found parabens, phthalates, petroleum derivatives and formaldehyde donors. Within weeks he had stopped designing propulsion systems and started designing gentler skincare.

He called his friend Dr. Brian Jegasothy, chair of dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh, whose research pointed to chronic inflammation as a root cause of skin aging and disease. Their partnership became Hylunia.

The Birth of Hylunia · 1988

Skincare that does no harm, built from first principles

Dr. Jegasothy led a team of dermatologists, chemists, holistic therapists and Ayurvedic vaidyas with some 200 years of combined experience. Their goal was skincare that avoided harm and actively healed, treating skin as a living organ.

The first formulation was mixed in a kitchen blender. Friends and family loved its light, non-greasy feel, so a KitchenAid mixer arrived for bigger batches, and the laundry room became a laboratory. The first cream was made in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and in that city's spirit of independence Hylunia gave customers freedom of choice by listing every ingredient and its effect.

The name blends hyaluronic acid with a Sanskrit-rooted suffix suggesting sanctuary. Hylunia states it was the first company to formulate all of its skincare with plant-derived hyaluronic acid.

What was left out

At a time when collagen and placental extracts were popular, Hylunia excluded:

  • Preservatives
  • Parabens
  • Carcinogens
  • Hormone disruptors
  • Fragrance
  • Dyes
  • Lanolin
  • Pesticide-contaminated extracts
  • Animal-derived ingredients

How it was formulated

Dr. Lingam paired an engineer's rigour with Dr. Jegasothy's dermatology, testing how ingredients interacted, how pH affected actives and any risk of contact dermatitis. Plant stem cells, peptides, adaptogens and Ayurvedic extracts were infused into hyaluronic acid as synergistic blends rather than added one by one.

Philosophy

Eastern wisdom, Western science

Ayurveda and modern research describe the same truth: chronic inflammation drives aging and disease.

Dr. Jegasothy's inflammation research, together with the free radical theory of aging, reminded Dr. Lingam of his father's teaching that food is medicine. Turmeric, garlic, ginger, cumin, fennel, fenugreek and yogurt, with yoga and meditation, were Ayurveda's 5,000-year-old ways of calming inflammation to heal and live longer.

Mind–Body–Beauty

Hylunia's formulas could fight inflammation, but they could not control stress. Stress raises cortisol at the expense of mood-supporting hormones and weakens the body's balance. Because stress is shaped by how we think, Dr. Lingam teaches that training the mind through yoga, meditation and mantra is Eastern medicine that complements modern medicine.

This became the Mind–Body–Beauty philosophy: calm the mind, let go of the past and care for the whole person, not only the skin. As he puts it, skin is only the canvas.

Philosophy of longevity

Aging is an art form

To Dr. Lingam, aging is neither a curse nor a medical condition. It is the gradual refining of body, thoughts and relationships, and a chance to release what no longer serves. Longevity means adding aliveness to your years, not just years to your life.

He teaches that our cells respond to love, routine, laughter, sleep and purpose more deeply than to expensive treatments.

  • MorningWarm water with lemon, or any herb meant for an empty stomach
  • DailyWalk barefoot on natural earth, or wear pressure-point slippers
  • MealsEat with presence and joy, and do not overeat
  • EveningRead something sacred or watch something that makes you happy

The Science of Happiness

Your thoughts are chemical. The body listens.

The Science of Happiness is Dr. Lingam's method of training the mind to heal the body. It weaves together neuroendocrinology, meditation, Ayurveda and doshas, mind and body detox, chakras and mantra.

His guided meditations are designed to calm the stress response and return the body to its natural healing state. Decades of teaching distilled it into ten laws, drawn from Ayurveda, the Yoga Sutras and meditation, and informed by modern science.

The Ten Laws of Happiness

  1. Keep a simple routineHabits that run on their own spare the body from shocks.
  2. Practise moderationAvoid extremes and make changes slowly so the body can accept them.
  3. Begin a new youLive by your own authentic beliefs and values, not limits set by others.
  4. Reclaim what you loved as a childMake space again for whatever made you happy growing up.
  5. Abort worst-case scenariosKeep away from negative people, news and messages.
  6. Stay positiveRetrain the mind's response to setbacks. Ask how each one might be a blessing in disguise.
  7. Make happiness your top prioritySet the intention first, and the rest will follow.
  8. Fill yourself with beautyFeel great inside and out. Beautify from within.
  9. Start nowNow is the best time to become balanced, stress-free and positive.
  10. Cherish happy memoriesTreasure joyful moments and live a life of enjoyment.

Hylunia Wellness MD Spa

A sanctuary where the body remembered how to heal

Dr. Lingam gave his philosophy a physical home in Costa Mesa, California. He wanted a sanctuary rather than a spa: a place where light, scent, touch and sound told the nervous system it was safe.

Hand-carved Balinese furniture, fibre-optic starry ceilings, dosha-matched aromatherapy, infrared detox and chakra stone therapy filled the space. In the sanctuary suite, guests rested to Dr. Lingam's guided meditations while a virtual journey to Bali played across the walls.

Every treatment was personalised, reflecting his belief that no single therapy fits everyone. In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions closed the spa. "Buildings can close," he said, "but healing doesn't need a roof." His teaching moved online.

Teaching, Workshops & Seminars

A guide more than a guru

In the 1990s, when the mind–body connection was rarely discussed, Dr. Lingam began teaching Ayurveda, meditation and yoga to doctors, healthcare professionals and aestheticians. He showed them how to reduce stress, find balance and cultivate happiness.

Students say he invites rather than imposes. He teaches through metaphor: the mind as a garden, the immune system as a choir, the nervous system as a trembling deer always looking for safety. Today he offers life coaching, Ayurveda and wellness coaching, and motivational talks.

His teachings became part of esthetician training in North America and Ayurvedic courses, and Hylunia formulations are used in dermatology clinics, spas, resorts and doctors' offices.

Future Vision

A digital wellness university

In what others call retirement, Dr. Lingam still consults with clients and reviews formulations. He is now planning his boldest chapter: an online platform to study the whole ecosystem of wellness, not just skincare.

His conviction is simple. Wellness should be democratized, and healing should be a birthright rather than a luxury.

  • Courses and workshops on the Science of Happiness
  • Training in Ayurvedic and wellness-based emotional healing
  • Skincare certification that includes neuroscience
  • Emotional detox protocols for practitioners
  • Online retreats with virtual sanctuary experiences

Legacy

Not rocket science. Not skincare science. Soul science.

Dr. Lingam teaches that inflammation begins in the mind as well as the body, that healing starts with a thought, and that beauty is revealed rather than applied. More than three decades on, Hylunia's core purpose is unchanged: to benefit humanity.

His advice for today is the simplest of all: wake up each morning and decide to be happy.
